Malet Street Building

Front entrance has a ramp. There is an accessible restroom in the basement and on the 5th floor. There are two elevators.
The building has heavy doors and help may be needed to open the doors.
If the student has a class on an upper floor they may need to take the elevator to reach an accessible restroom.

Gresse Street Building

Front entrance has a long ramp. The ramp may be difficult to navigate since it is rather steep. There is a long walk between Malet Street and Gresse Street. If a student in a wheelchair has classes in these two buildings they should be sure they have plenty of travel time.

There is an accessible restroom on the ground floor. There is a cafeteria/snack bar in the lower level that is not accessible. There are some classrooms that are not accessible since there are steps to reach the room.

Note: Birkbeck is working on making the Malet Street facility fully accessible by September 2005. They will no longer use the Gresse Street facilty once the Malet Street building is renovated. Check here for updates on the construction.

Disability office-Malet Street Building, first floor

Director: Mark Pimm
Website: University of London- Birkbeck -
Disability support

This office is only two years old and has a staff of two, the Director and a secretary. If any of our students need assistance they can contact Mark in advance.

If our office is willing to pay, Mark will help us make contact with people who can offer accommodations. If we need notetakers he will help us contact City Lit. University College of London has a job shop where he finds his readers. One source for interpreters and realtime captioners is the Sign Language Bureau as well as the Royal National Institute for the Deaf.

If you need assistance with exams such as extended time you can contact Jackie Vance who is the exam officer. If you need a separate room you can contact Stephen Wiles, who is in charge of the facilities at the Malet and Gresse Street Buildings.

Emergency Evacuation

Birkbeck has a general evacuation plan for disabled persons. In addition, all students with a disability which might delay their recognition of or response to the emergency alarm are encouraged to meet with Birkbeck's Health and Safety officer or with Mark Pimm to discuss a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan. Also, students should discuss their needs with their Residence Hall Bursar.

Access to Birkbeck via tube

The nearest tube stations are: Russell Square (Piccadilly line), Tottenham Court Road (Central, Northern lines), Goodge Street (Northern Line), Warren Street (Victoria and Northern Lines), Euston (Victoria and Northern Lines) and Euston Square (Hammersmith and City, Circle Lines) are all approximately half a mile away from the various Birkbeck buildings. Some buildings are better served by bus services. You can contact the Disability Coordinator at Birkbeck (Mark Pimm) for more information.

Medical Services

Many Birkbeck students can register with the Central Institute Health Service. This is located at 20 Gower St close to the Malet Street Building. All students may go to the Service (surgery) as non-registered patients. The surgery is open from 9am to 5:30 Monday to Friday. To make an appointment contact the Reception at 020 7636 7628. The biggest drugstore in London is Boots and there are many scattered throughout the city. There is a branch next to the Safeway on Marchmont Street.
