Purpose and background
MSU's Freshman Seminars allow all first-year students to explore intriguing topics in small, intimate learning environments.
MSU designed these seminars to help incoming students:
- develop intellectual curiosity,
- acquire needed college skills,
- earn academic credit,
- and
improve critical thinking and writing skills.
They also provide students with the opportunity to
- meet MSU faculty and staff,
- meet other incoming students,
- learn about life at college, and
- begin their social, academic and professional journey.
The seminars introduce students to the intellectual life of the University and to "the adventure of learning." Taught by volunteer faculty and staff members committed to first-year students, each seminar constitutes a "community of learning" focusing on a topic of mutual interest. To learn more about campus seminars, please visit the Freshman Seminars @ State Web site. Freshman Seminars Abroad combine these features with the opportunity for students to:
- gain international experience,
- develop an appreciation of the knowledge and skills required to become successful players in a global economy,
- and get an initial taste of the study abroad experience.
