Peer Adviser Job Description

Requirements: Applicants are required to:

  • Be registered MSU students
  • Have participated in a study abroad program (MSU or Non-MSU)
  • Have strong communication skills
  • Possess basic computer skills including but not limited to: word processing, e-mail, and spread-sheeting

Students are encouraged to show:

  • Knowledge of world geography, languages, religions, and political systems
  • Experience student advising or mentoring
  • Experience with public speaking
  • Technology skills pertaining to website development or videography
  • Enthusiasm towards study abroad

Responsibilities: Advisors will be expected to:

  • Be available in the Resource Room to advise students during scheduled office hours.
  • Offer a student perspective regarding office services.
  • Maintain a professional appearance while representing the Office at Study Abroad while scheduled in the Resource Room or at outside events.
  • Represent the office in various forms of the media (radio, television, print).
  • Be available to assist in various recruitment projects such as posting flyers throughout campus as well as staffing booths at university events.
  • Be available to conduct general informational meetings organized by Residence Life, Internationalizing Student Life and other departments.
  • Be available for occasional clerical tasks as assigned (mailings, copies, phones, etc.).
  • Be an asset to the OSA team. Assist office staff with large scale projects, presentations, and planning.

Selection/Schedule: Six to Eight Peer Advisers are needed for the academic year. The Peer Advisers will be supervised by an Office of Study Abroad Coordinator. Students must be able to work approximately of 15 hours per week during normal office hours in addition to occasional after hour and weekend events. Applications can be obtained at the OSA main office (109 International Center), or online.

Compensation: Peer Advisers will receive $8.00/hour with yearly wage increases for good performance.
