Tales from Abroad

Spring 2005
Anne Jansen - English Literature in Dublin

"I chose to stay overnight on Inishmore off the west coast of Ireland. Our whole class went for the day, rented bikes and rode to the ancient ring for Dun Aengus. The structure itself and the view were amazing.

I think my favorite time on the island was between 5 pm when the ferry left, and 11 am when it arrived again in the morning. Compared to what it was like at 4 pm, the town of Kilronan was dead at 10 minutes past five. I just wandered around for awhile and enjoyed the solitude and quiet. Later that night, I met the boy I was traveling with at the pub connected to our hostel. We talked for awhile until the men next to us asked where we were from. The next morning, I got up early and walked down one of the narrow roads to the other side of the island. I spent about an hour watching a seal colony until the tide came in. On the way back to town, I was almost run over by a herd of cattle running down the road. The time I spent on Inishmore is one of the most vivid memories I have of my study abroad."
