Tales from Abroad

Fall 2005
Kevin Rowe in Thailand

"Wandering around aimlessly at the Study Abroad Fair in spring of my sophomore year, I could not help but think that the bewildered look on my face was obvious to everyone. I really didn't know what I was looking for; I just heard that MSU had some great study abroad opportunities, and I wanted to see what it was all about. I was approached by a group of people who were working at the Fair. They had just returned from a semester in Thailand and they had a lot to say about it. Before I knew it, I was looking at photos and hearing stories of jungle treks, scuba diving tours, and temple excursions. Thailand was a place I knew nothing about and had never considered as a place to study, but that day at the Fair changed me. This was something I thought I would never really do, and that is the exact reason I knew I had to do it. Before I knew it I was on my way to Bangkok .

When I first decided to study abroad it was because I felt that learning about the international component of business would be important for my marketing degree; but I got much more than I bargained for. By leaving the security and normality that I was so used to in East Lansing I forced myself outside of my comfort zone. I no longer had instant access to the social network of friends and family I was so accustomed to, I had no idea how to speak the language, and I looked different than everybody. Suddenly I was the minority, and that was a very humbling experience for me. From these differences rose a personal character challenge that has reshaped my values, ideals, and beliefs. I was challenged to think about issues from new perspectives and points of view. My experiences have made me a more laid back, open-minded, and well-rounded individual. I conquered my fears and pushed myself to limits I never thought possible. I know the semester I spent abroad has added to my character more than any other time in my life.

The profound effect of my time in Thailand actually convinced me that I needed to study abroad again – this time for the entire academic year. In fact, I am writing this article to you looking out the window of my flat over the hills of Budapest, Hungary, where I am studying for the fall semester. I have been here a little over a month, and this experience, although different, has been no less grand than the first. In spring I will finish up my degrees in Thessaloniki, Greece – pretty cool way to go out isn't it?

Not many people can say they have meditated in Thai Buddhist temples, swum among countless Greek Islands, and explored the castles and churches of Hungary and the rest of Central Europe. I have made friends from over 20 countries and created memories that I will cherish and carry with me for the rest of my life. I am so thankful that I took this opportunity while I could; it has molded me into the person I am today. It gave me new direction in my life. It changed me and it will change you, too.

So when you go to the Study Abroad Fair and you feel kind of awkward because you don't really know what you are doing there, be assured I was the same way that day back in spring of 2002. Don't be afraid, take that first step, and I promise you will not look back."
