| "I
would like to share my study abroad experience with anyone who is
trying to prepare for a trip. I spent the second half of the summer
semester in London, England studying mass media. The important part
of this trip was not what I learned from the text book, but what I
learned about myself and other people. My advice is to try to stay
away from the group thing. I met some lifelong friends on my London
experience and had a lot of fun with them, but they were from MSU.
When I reflect on my experience, the one regret I have is only hanging
out with American people. I wish I would have done fewer things with
the MSU students in my program and taken advantage of the foreign
experience. It is harder than some people think to do this but I hope
you will learn from my regrets. Also, try to travel with others. I
had a scary experience in a train station when I was alone in Brussels:
people WILL KNOW you are foreign and it makes you appear vulnerable.
Aside from all of the warnings I want you to know I had a great experience.
However, I have decided I am not a big city person after trekking
around London all summer. I found Scotland and Wales to be much more
exciting. The people are a lot more open to foreigners in these countries
and talking with locals is much easier, at least it was for me. Have
fun, and be careful." |
