| "I
spent two weeks in London as a pre-view to my study abroad trip in
Northern England. That two weeks represented the very first time I
had ever been without any sort of support system. I went where I wanted
and when I wanted; I had no parents or house mates caring or worrying
about me. Even more significant than the independence was the experience.
It was my first time in a big city, and I was confronted with poverty,
a new reality to me. Meeting, eating, and talking with many homeless
people, I became disenchanted with this world. We live insulated lives
and do not worry about starving or freezing. That attitude is not
legitimate to me any more. I changed majors as a result of my experience
in London. Homelessness and poverty piss me off, and I am not comfortable
with my old career goals (cognitive psychology, a career in academia).
I want to go to law school, want to advocate for the homeless, want
to start a day care program for homeless children, and want that program
to take advantage of innovative education systems like the Acorn School
in CA... Study abroad, both formally and informally, changed my life." |
